The blues as an art form needs to be kept alive. I think people yearn today for some authenticity in the music that is not manufactured and spat out by a TV show. In releasing a track like “Blues ‘N Greens” I wanted to express a particular energy and vitality. At the core of this track is a defiance and an attitude of positive provocation.
“Blues ‘N Greens” has its roots in a slower version of the track that was more reminiscent of an early B.B. King instrumental shuffle. Taking the core rhythm section elements and speeding them up and adding additional layers created a drive, bite and attitude in the music.
“Blues ‘N Greens” takes the listener on a ride of rhythmic and harmonic twists, but still plays in the tradition of a driving blues shuffle. The tracks on this EP reach out to fans of classic 60’s and 70’s blues band, but still has a spiritual core firmly centred on the earlier, gritty tones of Chess Records that will draw in the modern blues listener.
As an Indie Artist and composer/producer, I have the freedom to take musical directions and make decisions that could be considered perhaps “un-commercial” or even career suicide. The approach to mixing and arranging the track was to create a mix more in the style of a great 70’s classic rock record, giving life and a sense of dynamics to the instrumentation. The aim was to avoid the mistake of many modern recordings that are overly loud and dynamically flat, which ultimately destroys the listener’s experiance.
I want to try to find a way to push the art form forward with new melodies, interesting arrangements, and classic studio techniques using today’s technology.
The release of “Blues ‘N Greens” is the accumulation of five years of hard work and planning for me. Between multiple trips to LA and Nashville it’s been a quest of honing studio skills, gaining industry insights, refining musicianship, writing, and production techniques.
Getting this single out is important to me because I believe the world still loves good music. I’m passionate about taking the format of the blues. ‘Blues N Greens’ is a jumping off point. I’m excited about it, and especially some of the tracks I have planned coming out later this year.
The “Blues ‘N Greens” EP is due for release mid 2017.
